In March 2004 the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Paul Murphy MP, announced that BSL and ISL were now recognised as official minority languages in Northern Ireland.
This development led the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure to create a working group to look at the way forward for BSL and ISL. Its key aims are to increase the numbers of interpreters and deaf tutors, raise awareness of the languages and promote best practice.
