RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

Gerry Hughes is the first deaf person to be involved in a transatlantic, single-handed sailing race in May 2005 from Plymouth to Newport (America). He achieved his goal of finishing the race although 27 out of the 41 participants pulled out, mainly due to bad weather.

Gerry finished the race despite experiencing major communication difficulties. He left his boat at Newport for a year and then flew back to America with Jeff McWhinney and Mark Robertson before sailing the yacht back to Troon on a trip that took 4 weeks.

Gerry, supported by Jeff and Mark, will give a talk on his experiences on Friday 26 January 2007 at Deaf Connections, 100 Norfolk Street, GLASGOW at 7pm.

A British Sign Language / English Interpreter will be provided. The entrance fee is £5 for adults, free for children. The event is supported by Deaf Connections.
