During the performance, the captions are displayed on a screen on or beside the stage, enabling the audience to read what is being said, without obstructing the actors. Speaker names, sound effects and offstage noises are also shown. Captions are prepared from the script of the play by highly trained staff.
Captioning performances used to be coordinated by STAGETEXT. They are now coordinated by the Federation of Scottish Theatre (FST). The FST represents theatres and touring companies across Scotland.
Captioning is the gateway into a new theatrical experience. It enables anyone with any form of hearing loss to enjoy live theatre at its best.
A wide range of performances including drama, musicals and pantomimes have already been captioned across Scotland at lots of different venues. The FST is working to increase the number of theatres presenting captioned.
If you are looking for information about captioned performances in your area, please contact your local theatre and ask them if they are presenting any captioned shows. Ask at the Box Office or look out for the symbol that denotes a captioned performance - CAP.
Captions have made all the difference between following the play and being baffled. Brilliant!
