RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

RNID Scotland has benefitted from the immense opportunities provided by first class local centres of academic and professional excellence, unique industrial partnerships and a strong working relationship with the Scottish Government, involving policy makers from across the political spectrum. Our work stands testament to what can be achieved when working in partnership with the Scottish Government and other partners in the voluntary, private and public sector.

The local partnerships we build help us to achieve our goals. Our continued engagement with deaf and hard of hearing people and our work with volunteers are also vital.

Breaking down barriers

In Scotland, many deaf people are prevented from accessing information, interacting with providers and employers, and participating in training and careers events. This in turn affects their learning and employment opportunities, and limits their ability to make informed decisions about careers and training options. RNID Scotland works in three key areas to break down these barriers:

  • campaigning for change
  • changing attitudes
  • providing services.

Campaigning for change

RNID campaigns and lobbies on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing people in the Scottish Parliament, and raises awareness of deafness in the media, among health professionals and the general public. Read more about campaigning in Scotland.

Changing attitudes

RNID challenges negative attitudes and ignorance about deafness and hearing loss. We run training courses to help businesses become more responsive to the needs of deaf people and those with other disabilities, which raises staff awareness and improves practical communication skills.

Providing direct services

We provide a number of services in Scotland directly to deaf and hard of hearing people, and employers:
