RNID Cymru is calling for:
- a maximum waiting time of 18 weeks including first referrals, referrals for hearing aids (from GP to ENT to Audiologist) and direct referrals for hearing aids (from GP to Audiologist).
- the adoption of the UK wide quality standards for audiology services. We are currently involved in development of these standards with participation from the UK Health Departments and audiology services.
- consistent and reliable local support services for people diagnosed with a hearing loss who are given a hearing aid.
Background
- Receiving a hearing aid can greatly increase quality of life and social inclusion.
- In 2002 NHS digital hearing aids became available in Wales. But, too many people are waiting too long to be assessed and fitted with new or upgraded hearing aids.
- Hearing loss can have an impact on an individual's emotional health, well-being and independence. Immediate, consistent and reliable support services for people diagnosed with a hearing loss and their families are essential.
