RNID Cymru is calling for:
- A Wales wide review in all schools and colleges to find out current activity taking place to support the social development, emotional and mental health of deaf pupils.
Background
- 40-50% of young deaf and hard of hearing children experience emotional and behavioural problems compared to 25% of children in the hearing population.
- Deaf children often experience feelings of frustration and isolation. This is because their families don't know how to communicate with them effectively and how to involve them in family activities with hearing siblings.
- Poor teaching support in mainstream schools can mean that many deaf children are not getting the same value from their education that hearing pupils do. This can cause frustration, isolation and problems in other areas of their lives.
