for the first time sign language users will have equal access to Assembly proceedings
Welsh Assembly Members have become more accessible to deaf and hard of hearing people. Individuals have had deaf awareness training, and a sign language booking service has been set up at the Assembly.
On 4 July 2002, Welsh Assembly Members and their support staff received a second deaf awareness training session to help them learn about the different communication needs of deaf and hard of hearing people. BT gave its support to the awareness programme by donating four Minicom textphones to the party groups at the Assembly.
Deaf and hard of hearing people in Wales who want to make contact with Assembly Members can do so on the following telephone numbers:
Sign language interpretation of Assembly business is now available at the National Assembly for Wales. Visitors will be able to book the service by contacting the Assembly two weeks before their visit.
RNID Cymru has been lobbying for the introduction of this service since April 2001 through the All Party Group on Deaf Issues. Now, for the first time, sign language users will have equal access to Assembly proceedings.
If you would like to access the Assembly’s BSL service to listen to a plenary session or a regional committee meeting, or to take a public information tour of the Assembly building in Cardiff Bay, then ring the booking line two weeks in advance. The Assembly will book and pay for the interpreter.
