Newborn hearing screening programme
RNID Cymru calls on Welsh Assembly Government to test all newborn babies for hearing loss and ensure that effective intervention services are available.
One in every 1000 children is born with a significant permanent hearing loss. RNID Cymru has been campaigning for all babies in Wales to be routinely tested for hearing loss and to ensure that families with deaf babies get the support they need during the crucial early years.
In January 2002 the Minister for Health and Social Services, Jane Hutt AM, announced that from April 2002 systems would be put in place to introduce a newborn hearing screening programme in Wales.
