Deaf medical students??

Hi, I am about to start the 5 year medicine course at Peninsula Medical School. I have a moderate- severe loss in both ears. I'm interested in talking to any other deaf students especially in medical careers- I'm finding it very hard to locate a stethoscope that I can use with my hearing aids.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Michelle.

There is a UK group of professionals who set up a website to offer guidance to people like themselves, with hearing loss.

I am kicking myself. We had them linked to our own charity site, and it appears that when we moved our site, somehow we have no longer got their site details..... Emoticon: Sad smile

I will keep looking...

Sadly the previous RNID general forum is no longer, so I can't search back for the time they came on here. (I'd been lookin for stethoscopes for a friend who is a nurse, and they responded to my request).

I'll try and search them out on a search engine. Just had a quick go, with no success.

I'll get back ASAP. Emoticon: Winking smile

Hi Michelle,

Tigger just let me know about your message. We've a growing group of health professionals with hearing loss here in the UK with quite a few other medical students and recently qualified doctors (and older docs!) willing and able to share experience, so do get in touch.

There's some info about stethoscopes on our website - the link Tigger gave you. Also, see the group in the USA: Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses www.amphl.org There are loads of d/Deaf/HOH medics in the States so they have lots of experience. Good info on their website about stethoscopes.

Feel free to get in touch with me direct - if you can tell me a bit about your hearing loss and what type of aids you use, I can give some specific advice about stethoscopes.

The contact form on our website www.hphl.org.uk will reach me.

Best wishes,

Clare

Dear all,
I have been asked by one of my students here at the University of Northampton to try to find out how other deaf people who lipread work effectively in an environment where face masks are used. We have discussed a lipspeaker but they would be required to wear a mask too in a surgical environment. Various people have suggested clear face masks, are they something people use? Any help you can offer would be great. Many thanks Jayne

Hi Jayne. Please refer to a post further up where there is a link to an organisation set up by medics who have hearing loss issues and who offer support to others. Emoticon: Winking smile

Hi there, Congratulations on being accepted for medicine course! I wanted to do veterinary science course about 15 years ago, but was told not to apply during my interviews because it would be too difficult with my hearing problem! I decided to do a biology degree instead, but even now, i wish i had perserved. During my biology degree, I got a grant for a notetaker to attend my lectures, which was a great help. Now, I use remote captioning for meetings etc (www.2020captioning.com), a great service funded by Access to Work (UK government grant). Hope that helps and good luck!
