Help with Mum's NHS Reflex HAs

Greetings all .Can someone please help? The NHS has fitted my elderly Mum with Reflex M BTE hearing aids connected to ear moulds. The main problem she’s having is the awful feedback/whistling from the aid fitted to her right ear (the ear with the most severe hearing loss. The left side aid works fine.)

This whistling begins as soon as the aid is switched on regardless of whether the ear mould has been inserted or not! The local NHS clinic were unhelpful when I attended with her recently, blaming ‘excessive wax’ for the problem and suggesting olive oil drops to help remove the wax. Aarrgh!

It seems to me that there is definitely a problem with either the hearing aid or the connection to the ear mould. When the intermittent whistling begins my Mum has taken to squeezing the connection tube between the aid and ear mould – and this seems to cure the problem for a while and then it returns. It’s driving her to distraction! Can any one please help? Thank you.

I had a similar problem once. If you take the mould off the aid and put your finger over the tube and turn the aid volume on max. You should not be able to hear any whistling. Make a loud sound at the same time. If you hear no feedback then the problem is probably the mould and you must insist on them making a new one. Good Luck.

That is good advice PeteO.
Has your mum had her ear syringed/cleaned out now BeeBeeKay?
If there is excessive wax in the ear the sound that should be going in your mums ear will bounce back and cause the whistle.
It might also be a problem with the tubing going into the earmould being loose.
Any loose connections in the system will make an aid whistle
After the wax is removed take your mum back and see if they will make a new mould.
It may be that the aid is being pushed to its limits too. Please get the wax out then go back again
