Have any T sufferers besides me heard about 5-HTP and how a lack of serotonin (from the pineal gland) may be implicated in the occurrence of tinnitus? I am willing to give it a try, but I am a bit worried about possible side effects which can be a serious.

Apparently 5-HTP is a precursor of serotonin.

I've tried 5-HTP. It had no effect on my tinnitus. Anti depressants like Seroxat, Prozac make the brain produce more serotonin but in different ways.

I certainly had no side effects with 5-HTP. Prozac zombied me out after 6 months.

I have also tried 5 htp, it had no effect on my T, neither did GABA or melatonin, though it had and effect on my mood and sleep pattern.

I found out that taking all those pills i did made me think more aboute T, so now I just eat my vitamin for my health in general.

Was your daily 5-HTP dosage about 50mg? Vitamin B6 is supposed to get rid of any excess 5-HTP by excretion if taken at the same time. Is that true?

I sure wish I could approach my regular doctor for more info but he has written me off (apparently) a long time ago as being an *extraordinarily difficult* patient.

He hates it when a patient has already informed himself independently before coming to his office. He feels that this complicates his job and he dismisses practically any suggestions, including the one that a patient AND the doctor may be more successful while actually working together.

We have a severe doctor shortage so changing a GP is basically a bad idea unless when wants to end up with no doctor at all!

I will try the 5-HTP with caution! Thanks for the feedback.

I was taking 50mg a day of 5-HTP. I have also taken GABA, L-theanine and just about everything else at varying times. Just made me sleepy.

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is an extract of Griffonia simplicifolia seeds from coastal West Africa and is verified to be free of the “peak X” contaminant. 5-Hydroxy Tryptophan or 5-HTP is the direct precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin., which transfers nerve impulses from one cell to another and regulates several vital processes in the body, Low levels of serotonin are associated with sleep problems, Despair, abnormal apprehension fearfulness, compulsive eating Malfunction of mind or bodys, restless leg syndrome, migraines, fibromyalgia and low Discomfort threshold. Many people that are afflicted with one of those conditions often have others, which has led some researchers to label them collectively as ""Low Serotonin Syndrome.
Serotonin is an important initiator of sleep. In numerous studies 5-HTP has been shown to decrease the time required to get to sleep and to decrease the number of awakening. It also increases REM sleep and deep sleep. By increasing the brain’s concentration of serotonin, an antidepressant effect is created. 5-HTP works by increasing the amount of serotonin manufactured in the brain. Although systematically administered serotonin does not readily enter the brain, its direct precursor, 5-HTP does penetrate the blood-brain barrier, and therefore, dietary consumption of 5-HTP leads to an increase in brain serotonin concentration.

5-HTP does increase serotonin - it also has a number of side effects ( see this link for some info http://www.5htpreviews.com/5htp-side-effects/ (external link, opens new browser window) ) so probably caution should be used to make sure you get a quality product that is researched backed and read up on some well researched sites.

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is an extract of Griffonia simplicifolia seeds from coastal West Africa. Purity is assured by HPLC. 5-HTP is the direct metabolic precursor of serotonin and is important for the production of melatonin.
