Could anyone tell me if they know of otc induced tinnitus going away? if so how long did they suffer for?its been 5 weeks since Ibuprofen triggered my T. i have been to see 2 ENT specialists who both told me that they knew Ibuprofen caused T but neither of them could say how long it lasts for. whether or not it is irreversible. I cant believe that something as stupid as taking a couple of pills can altimately wreck my life. i cant come to terms with the fact that it could be here for good. i have never cried so much, i want to rewind 5 weeks and get back to the life i loved. please, please somebody tell me the wear off eventually. any news please

Nat, Yes - mine did...
I got "t" several years ago from taking too many over the counter Sinus Meds. Please hang in there as my "t" did go away over time. I can't remember exactly how long it took, but I swear it went away.

Now, for me, it did come back this year but I am sure if was from stress and a hearing loss which I developed - I went to different specialists and all attribute this latest bout due to my stress level on overload.

The doctors alas do not have all the answers, but there is hope for you so please, please stop blaming yourself for taking pills - none of us, including the doctors, know about side effects for each indivdual - that includes prescribed and otc . I too learned this all the hard way.

I can say stress will make it worse - please do everything you can to distract yourself from the "t". I had to force myself at times to even leave the house but hobbies, meditation, exercise, friends, soft music all ease the pain of t and help reduce our stress.

Nat, increase your odds for your t decreasing by taking good care of your health. I wish you the best of luck. Don't Give Up!

Thnks so much Marcia for your words of encouragement. this is the only positive response so far. the ENT specialist wont tell you anything. My ears have been hurting the last few days, aching, i am taking that as a good sign that they are trying to fix themselves. The doctor wants me to take prozac but i am holding out. did you take prozac? should i give in.
thanks again
Nat

Hi everybody! I need to add my words here because I am very surprised as what you say nat. I have never heard of anybody getting tinnitus from taking 2 tablets of Ibuprofen. I've read a lot of stuff on the net and in chat forums and I know that all the 'aspirin family' medication, such as ibuprofen can give you tinnitus BUT at very high dosage and/or over a long period of time, and there is usually a background of dehydration or very high level of stress. Who told you that you got tinnitus from Ibuprofen? In my opinion (and I don't pretend to know much) it was just a coincidence.
When it comes to take prozac, I'm not sure about that. I've had tinnitus for 9 months and never was I offered any pill. I'm still alive! Prozac has many side effects.
Hope it helps but please, let me know if it has been proven that you got t from Ibuprofen. I used to take a lot of it before too. So I would be interested....

Nat. No one, again, my opinion, always can pointpoint the exact cause of t in many cases - I have been to 4 ENT's & audiologists and all "think" my t is from stress but none know for sure. While I take an anti-d and I was initially taking Xanax to help handle my stress, perhaps you should see another doctor and get another opinion Before you start on Prozac. Look at the past posts here and also do a google search. I agree with tom5 that you should do your own research before you start that, or any other med. Please also check this other website for more support group info to help you make a good decision.

Hang in there and don't give up. You are on the mend so remain calm. Your friend, Marcia

Hi Tom
I am totally convinced about ibuprofen, causing my tinnitus. its too much of a coincidence. the doctor prescribed ibuprofen for muscular aches, but i didint read the instructions and assumed i could take two at a time, the tablets prescribed were 400mg each. i was dosing up on 800mg each time three/four times a day. the irony is i continued to take them when my ears started to ring as i thought it would clear my head! so yes i admit it wasnt just a couple of pills and i took them for about a week, but i know it was because of drug. it started in left ear sounding like the raditator was leaking water gurgling then woke up one morning with ringing in both ears, like i had been to a really loud concert.i then researched why my ears were ringing and straight away found tons of info about it causing tinnitus as a side effect, but how long is a side effect, its been 5+ weeks now, and i am beginning to panic big time. am struggling to find what is meant by temporary??? and am i one of the people that the data says is 'rarely permanent'. if it is def a side effect surely the company will have some informations as to how long side effects should last. where do i find this info?
have also avoided taking prozac yet, purchased a pillow with built in speakers which helps me get to sleep. have managed two nights without sleeping pill. what does your tinnitus sound like, mines a constant high pitch high frequency, which also supports drug ototoxic effects.
hope we can continue to share info found will keep you posted

sorry Tom but i forgot to ask you how long you have had T for?

Nat,
I think that for your own benefit you should focus on how to learn to deal with your tinnitus. Don't wait there for it to disappear! It might, it might not. So, if it doesn't, get started now on how to get back into your life. And guess what, even if your tinnitus eventually disappears, everything you've learnt towards trying to cope with it will help you to cope with any other miseries life can throw at you.
If your ENT thinks that your tinnitus is from ototoxic effect, how long does he/she think it's going to last? As mentioned before, I used to have a lot of migraines and headaches and was taking ibuprofen quite often. I don't anymore. Nobody said to me that it could have triggered my tinnitus.
I've had tinnitus for almost 10 months and have up to 4 sounds, from low frequency to high pitch. I've lost some hearing as well and have earaches.
Keep on using the pillow speakers, after several nights with a decent sleep you won't feel so desperate anymore, just mad (just joking!).
Good luck!

i know that you are right Tom. i have a good life and i should appreciate the fact that it could be a lot worse. i have support around me and people who care. i have had some knocks in life as everyone has but there was always that element of control. i am a control and its especially getting to me because i cant do anything about it. toleration is a big word for me.but i will have to learn to tolerate it. i have started to go to the pub again and am not afraid to have a drink. and i am finally eating some food. 24 lbs lost in 5 weeks not the bikini diet i had in mind!!!
i wont let go yet of my conviction that NSAID caused my tinnitus but i will have to face up the fact i have to get on with my life. and am also looking into trt and counselling? so thats almost an acceptance isnt it??
thanks Tom

Nat,
I don't want to be a horrible person and put you down, but when I said that your tinnitus might not go it is because I have read on several occasions that tinnitus can 'survive' the cause that first started it. What it means is that for instance, some people got tinnitus from being very stressed by some life events. These life events get better but the tinnitus remains. That's why they always say that whatever causes your tinnitus you have to try to calm down as much as you can as you could start a vicious circle.
When it comes to TRT that could be difficult to find here in the UK. At the hospital the audiologist told me I was doing TRT and when I enquired in other chat forums (from the States) I then realised that IT IS NOT TRT. But I supposed that if you get fitted with sound generators that might already help you a great deal. What helps me a little psychologically is to see my tinnitus as a chronic pain (tinnitus researchers came to this conclusion). You have to live with it and you have to learn your limits and accept that life is not the same anymore. As a rule when I read or hear something that makes me feel bad or even very upset, I just force myself to straight away get it out of my head. You have already so much on your plate.
Good luck! (I lost a lot of weight at the start as well. Unfortunately, I am now bigger than ever. Ouch!)
