Hello Im Damien 23 from Birmingham. I have had Tinnitus since i was 16 (yr2000). I feel like i am the only young person with this condition as the only people who i have ever spoke to, who have the condition are 50+! Is there anyway of finding other young people with tinnitus?

Hi Damien,

I suppose by doing what you have just done and posting on forums is probably the best way!!

Just for your info, although I'm in my 30's now, I was 20 when I developed tinnitus.

Also, try asking those around you. For years I never spoke of mine as it wasn't a problem. Now it has become one again so I have mentioned it to people around me and I am suprised at how many people say they have it or someone who does. I think because most people will learn to live with it without it being a problem that they never mention it so you don't know they have it.

In the last month I have found out at least 7 people who I have known for a while have tinnitus, but I had no idea as they never mentioned it until I told them about mine.

Hi Damien,
I know someone who got a T when she was 7. now ,she is 24 years old.
I know another one who got it when she is 17,one month later, was cured.
and I know many people got a T when they was 20+ years old.

Yep, posting here is a pretty good way to find other young people with tinnitus! There are a lot, sadly..

I started to get buzzing in my ear at 15/16 years old while playing the trumpet and it has been worsening. Now I'm 20 and have distortion, ringing, rumbling etc.

So it's definitley not just a thing for old-ish folk!

Yeah am 23 as well with t. Mine has been present for 5+ months & have also xperienced it in my teens. Mine may have come from loud music or my anxiety or taking different medications or something else.

Probably the reason u speak with more older people who have it is becuase it is estimated that 1 out of 3 people over 60 hhave t to a degree.

However I have always said to the RNID that the UK is a TICKING TIME bomb 4 more younger people to develop t as the British government like to steal peoples money with speeding traps and doing 33mph in a 30 zone rather than set noise laws and impose high fines who break them and invest in tinnitus awareness.

Hi my name is Lilia I am 17 and I have had tinnitus since march 2007. It also feels like I am the only one at my age with this condition.
It started in my right ear but over the past couple of months it has worsened and developed into both ears and from day to day i often worry of having a brain hemmerage and have a strange buzzy vibrating clicky feeling in my head. I really just feel like i cant cope. On june 17th i had an MRI scan and am currently awaiting results. I HATE IT!!

I had t in my youth, mainly after going to gigs etc, but it always faded away, now I am 45 and have permanent t. The best advice I can give is don't hate it, try to learn to accept it as part of what makes you tick. It's a natural thing happening in your head, it's there in everyone but not everyone can hear it in normal conditions. If you ask any of your friends to go into a very quiet environment, such as a sound booth, they will hear noises in their head after a couple of minutes guaranteed. The difference is that when they come back into normal sound levels their brain will ignore the t sounds, unfortunately our brains have stopped ignoring it.

Hey there mate. I have Tinnitus as well, and I am 23. I've had it since November 2007, so it hasn't been a full year yet. When I first got it, I thought normal life was over for me, but you know what, it's such a minor symptom that it's not worth stressing over it. It could be a lot worse, trust me. Look at all the accomplishments people with greater disabilities have made. It makes you wonder how strong a person can be, and it makes you a stronger person.
