Does anyone else on here suffer from earache, pressure and stabbing pains. Ive got all this on top of my T!!!

I've hit an all-time-low with this suffering, I can't do anything. I'm seeing an ENT dr again on Tues so I'm really counting on this for some help, I really need it!

Any thoughts? I'm in a pit of dispair right now. I can't distract myself from it no matter how hard I try.

Cheers for asking

Well for some reason I can't pop either of my ears so I'm getting uneven pressure behind my eardrum. That might explain some of the pain I guess. My dr didn't really know for sure so I've got some nasal drops to try out.

And in a few weeks Ive got an MRI scan which i've heard are quite noisey so I'm a bit nervous about that. I hope I can where ear plugs.

I can't help thinking I've damaged my ears in some way even though I have no visable hearing loss.

Good luck with the drops.

Re MRI. they give you either ear plugs or headphones. I had a bit of a giggle when I went for my first one, removed bith my Bahas and then she handed me these ear plugs!!

Irony is, I could hear it just as much with them as without!!

It is noisy, try to take your mind off elsewhere while you are having it. I "went" to a sandy beach somewhere nice and hot...... Emoticon: Toothy smile

It's a sort of thumping and grinding noise, think "building site" and you won't go far wrong. Emoticon: Winking smile

I'll take some plugs to be on the safe side!

Does anyone have tips for relieving pressure? Its driving me insane. MY EARS JUST WON'T POP!!

hi, i'm new to this site, a chronic t sufferer, loud, mid 50's, joint probs, bit of a wreck, where ear popping is a problem i tend to suck boiled sweets alot, drink plenty of mineral water, try inhalation, steam, not to hot, possibly with balsom or eucalyptus, and check out what you're eating, in particular dairy products, and of course, check out your ears for wax, good luck, bj

Hi Johnny,

I found this on the above website:
Why won't my ears go pop?

"Question

I have a had an irritating problem with my ears for a while, ranging

from a dull ache to a fairly sharp pain. I constantly feel like I need to equalise the pressure in my ears. Although I do try, my ears just won't pop. It is much worse in my right ear. Although I haven't had ear problems in the past, when I did a diving course five years ago I did have problems trying to equalise. I’ve had a few colds over the last month that probably haven't helped, but they have cleared up and yet I still have the ear thing! I also notice that when I commute by the fast train, the problem is worse. What should I do - it is uncomfortable and I'd love to get rid of this irritating 'hollow' feeling. Please help.

Answer

It sounds like you are having problems with your Eustachian tubes (ETs). They are slender passages between the middle ear and the throat that allow equalisation of pressure across the eardrum.

Anything that prevents the movement of air through the ETs will produce the symptoms that you describe, particularly descending in an aeroplane or, even worse, when diving.

A blocked nose or mucous catarrh often prevents the ETs from opening to allow air up into the middle ear. In the presence of nasal congestion, after damage to the nose, or with anatomical abnormalities like cleft palate, the ETs let air out from the middle ear, but do not allow it back in. This stretches the eardrum and causes pain and 'popping'.

Obviously you cannot avoid colds, but you may be able to relieve your symptoms by avoiding nose-blowing and using nasal decongestant drops (such as Otrivine) for a few days. If the problem persists or you have hay-fever, then ask your doctor to examine your nose, throat and ears. Hopefully, intermittent nose drops are all you will need. But if you turn out to have nasal polyps or an anatomical cause, you just might need to see an ENT surgeon.

Yours sincerely

Dr John Pillinger"

Hope you feel better soon. Best of luck, I know you are having such a rough time. Marcia
