I need good ear plugs, what do you recommend?

Being a tinnitus sufferer (I'm only 17, had it for a year or so now) It doesnt bother me much, because as soon as I got it, I took immediate action.

Basically I avoid places with loud noise, but I miss out on alot, I used foam ear plugs that reduce the sound by 32 Db but their pretty cheap.

I am looking for a good quality pair of ear plugs, that will block out the most noise. I'm not bothered if I can hardly hear anything with them in or if the sound is muffled, as I usualy go to show face and drink so I dont need to be engaging into many conversations.

So any recommendations on ear plugs that will block out the most noise possible?

Thanks.

Hi there,
Try Elascin ER25's custom made earplugs. Not sure you can get them higher than that, but the better fitting should protect you more....

I just got some plain unfiltered custom moulded ones. I haven't managed to find out the SNR of them, but we think around 30DB or just below.

I personally don't think they seal properley so not sure how effective they are. I know for sure they are not as good as the foam SNR 37 ones I've recently discovered!

Depends how much protection you need!

Also, for many years i was using Docs Pro Plugs. There are two kinds, vented or non vented and offer SNR 2 or SNR 7. Those figures are deceptive though as they knock out a great deal of high end but not the bass. I was fine with these for years, it's only been because I was at gigs every week that I had any probs.

I'm sure whatever ones you find easiest to use will be fine as long as you don't over do it!

Hi Sarah,

What make of earplug did you go for after? I need some infiltered ones too I think. What's it like in social situations, with conversations etc...have you tried them in that environment yet or use them solely for gigs? I'm interested if anyone wears them in louder bars or clubs also, and if so, how effective are they to hear etc.

Thanks,
M

Katorak,

They have Arlington EM on them, but that's the info I have. I didn't choose them it's just what the Audiologist recommended. I haven't used them much yet, but I don't feel they offer anyway near as much protection as the foam ones, so I don't think I'd use them at a loud gig.

I have work them while trying them out at home and it is hard work distinguishing what my boyfriend says while wearing them. I've also worn them for a coupl of band practices and do have to ask the others to shour at me, so for speech they aren't great.

I would have thought however that filtered ones for an environment such as a bar/pub would be perfect, as it's not as loud as a gig and the filter will enable you to hear the speech. I know there are filtered ones for shooting that offer a higher SNR than the musicians ones. I think you can get ones up to 28db, they might be worth considering!

hi my name is G B and i am new to the forum. i was 21 when i first had a blast of tinnitus i am now 53. thanks for all info on earplugs. what i use to do for years was use a very small amount of cotton wool with a slight smear of vaseline around the outside which sealed/kept it in/worked a treat for me. my long hair hid this. i now have shaved hair and wear no protection. i have found that stress affects my tinnitus, i try not to worry about the slightest but the brain knows, you can t fool it....as soon as i am under pressure for what ever reason, at present i have to submit a case study for my end of course, and guess what the tinnitus has reared it s ugly head, a simple life with the least challenges, worries, stress lowers the 'pitch/tone' with my tinnitus. also keeping out of bad weather such as wind helps or wear a hat.....I tend to wear my 'ear protectors' the sort you wear for clay shooting when I vacuum the house.
anybody got any suggestions for earplugs that are invisble/small for somebody who likes to wear her hair short and ears showing.?/or do i go back to the cotton wool thanks

Thats the smartest thing I have heard someone say on this forum! When I went to my specialist she told me it was ok to go to bars etc.. and noise will not harm it as it never changes I thought that cant be right so got a second opinion and was told the same thing so went to bars and then the ringing went worst and I got shooting pains in my temple like someone was stabbing me in my brain with an ice pick...it was unpleasant. Luckily it didnt last but when ever im exposed to noise the ice pick comes out again only lasts about 1 second at a time. Im also after the same information as G B, on where can you find invisiblesmall earplugs...its either that or I grow my hair because I dont want to go throught the whole story when I go somewhere of "why are you wearing earplugs"

Thanks
