It sems to me that at the ned of the day there is still little real info available about t. It annoys me that t is associated with a ringing noise in the ear and is associated with deaf/hip people.
I have already told you all that everyone has the t codec sound: old .young; deaf.hip. nomal hearing. We are born with the codec as part of our genetic footprint, and as i said before it seems the brain prefers any sound to no sound at all.
Lets try and move the debate on.
What I would like to know from you all is the following info please.
1 What is the precise noise that you hear? Is it a ringing noise and if so what kind of ringing? like an alarm clock or a door bell or a iren etc etc.
2. If it is not a ringing noise what sort of sound is it Can you please describe it in as much detail as possible please.
3 Is it always the same sort of sound that you hear or does it change from day to day.
4 When does the sound start? first thing in am or during the day or at night.
5 What position are you in when you hear the sound. Are you lying in bed lying down somewhere, standing/sitting etc.
6 Have you ever noticed any change in sound when you change position.
7 Can you tell me please what ( in general terms) sort of mood you are in when the sound is at minimal/maximum.
I will explain more once i have your results.

1 Ringing like hissing sound in my right ear. can sometimes sound like an alarm, can sometimes sound like hissing. also an intermitant sound that i can only class as a tinnitus spasm. it sounds very much like a rattle of keys rattled but much quicker and intense.
sometimes i hear music as in singing.
2. the sound of a car engine that goes from my right ear to the back of my head and to the left ear.
the chinging sound like the rattle of keys. thats the best i can describe. it is a very strange noise. then now and again i hear music. sometimes i wake up hearing a song that i have not heard since i was a child.
3 it changes often but the ringing, hissing sound stays the same
4 i hear the hissing ringing in my right ear when it's quiet but the levels can get very high. then it becomes more of a hissing then ringing. it gets worse sometimes when i stand up. or am feeling very stressful
5 the engine noise i hear seems to come on worse when i lay down to sleep. i tend to wake up with it. i only notice it when my head lays down. very strange
6 no.
but with the engine sound noise i hear it is normaly when i am in bed or am resting with my head down laying on a pillow.
7 when it is minimal i am very happy, when it's maximum i can't sleep, i panic and feel sick to the stomach. i wont eat and become distant.

1- it s a high pitch sound.. but during day i hear it zzz because of background noise 2- same above 3- it changes sometimes.but not everyday 4- starts when i wake up 5-i hear it in every position when i hear it. sometimes i dont notice it. i mean it s very low but i know it s always there. just not loud to notice thats all. 6 when i move my neck back i feel a spike but thats not what you r asking i think. 7 when low i feel happy i feel it s gone. when loud i say oh jhfgksfgsdgf it s back. i feel a bit upset
btw it goes away really. read this. http://tinnitussupport92262.yuku.com/topic/5605 (external link, opens new browser window)
i know this boy since his t began. and his t began after loud playing guitar. so we can say noise induced. 1 year later now you know how he is.
if the problem was because of hearing damage, how did his t gone? cause we know damaged hearing cant be corrected. so this is a nice example of recovery for noise induced t.

Maybe he's brain has habituated the sound. or as you said it has gone. my tinnitus started when i was about 8 year old. as i had a hole in my eardrum. for many years i never heard the ringing as it did not bother me. but it was always there. i'm pretty much sure the tinnitus i have now though is more noise induced though.

but i must add this. he didnt have clasical notch seen in many acoustic traumas at 5000 or 4000 hz. but he had ringing for 9 months. strange but we see several cases like this. and the important point is that his t began after playing loud music.

1 What is the precise noise that you hear? I have 5 distinct sounds: a loud, very, very high pitched hissing right at the top of the hearing range, a mid range feedback "beeeeeee" type sound, a loud "white noise" hissing/roaring in the mid ranges, a quiet inconsistent and almost random two-note flutter (it reminds me of the alien message frequency in the movie "Contact") and a very quiet trilling that sounds like a distant burglar alarm. Interestingly, these sounds did not all start at once, but came on gradually over a period of months.
2. If it is not a ringing noise what sort of sound is it See above.
3 Is it always the same sort of sound that you hear or does it change from day to day. The louder noises are constant, the two softer ones I mentioned last, only appear when resting. But that could be due to their relative quietness.
4 When does the sound start? first thing in am or during the day or at night. This is really inconsistent. Some days I wake up with my ear roaring, other days it holds off until breakfast. Recently I have been woken at night with particularly bad tinnitus.
5 What position are you in when you hear the sound. Are you lying in bed lying down somewhere, standing/sitting etc. Most of my sounds are with me 24/7, no matter what I do.
6 Have you ever noticed any change in sound when you change position. When I have a cold, my tinnitus "roars" up when I move my head quickly.
7 Can you tell me please what ( in general terms) sort of mood you are in when the sound is at minimal/maximum. Stressed or owwied in some way.

1) I hear a humming sound like a fan or old refrigerator or pool motor of the time. It sometimes changes to a more high pitched ringing sound. 2) See Above 3) The noise is always present, but is worse when I go to sleep at night and awaken. 4) I hear the noise all the time unrelentlessly. 5) Hear all the time but it is worse when I get up from bed in the morning. It is also worse after I have been on the cell phone for more than 15 minutes (I get lots of long distance calls as I am far from "home", so this happens frequently). 6) Yes, noise changes when I get up suddenly, bend or more my head differently for some reason. 7) At my worst, very depressed, frustrated and angry that I have no "silence". Better mood when I am more "distracted" doing some activity.
Good luck with your study Ian. P.S. I am going to another ENT today. The last one insulted me so I will try to be optimistic this one will be more positive....hmmmm.
