We’re working on reducing the impact our work has on the environment.

In September 2006 we had an eco audit that was sponsored by the City Bridge Trust. The audit helped us to work out how to measure the environmental impact of our work and helped us to set aims to reduce the impact. The audit looked at:

  • the energy we use
  • the type of travel we use
  • the way we get rid of waste.

What we plan to do

We have created a plan for April 2007 to March 2008. We plan to:

  • Reduce the amount of water we use at all our main offices.
  • Buy our paper from companies that use sustainable sources of wood.
  • Increase the amount of recycled material we use in our publications.
  • Reduce waste that can’t be recycled.
  • Become one of the first charities to pay for recycling waste electrical equipment in proportion to the amount of products we sell.
  • Get staff to take more personal responsibility for the environmental impact of their day to day work.
  • Publish our environmental impact and performance each year in our Impact Report.
  • Measure the amount of energy we use and report our environmental performance to RNID’s Board of Trustees once a year or more.

Our carbon footprint

Carbon dioxide is a gas that's produced when certain types of energy are made or used. It can damage the environment.

The government are encouraging everyone to monitor and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide their activity results in. This amount is called a carbon footprint and is measured in kilograms or tonnes.

In 2005 to 2006 our carbon footprint was estimated to be 2,197 tonnes by 3 Acorns, an independent environmental consultancy. Every year we will try to reduce this and put in place clear targets.

Will reducing environmental impact cost money?

We can do a lot without spending extra money and some of the work could even save us money.

We will start by focusing on the activities that will save us money, such as:

  • saving water
  • using less electricity.
