These are the questions we are most commonly asked about the video clips on our website. Click on any question to read the answer. Use the "back to top" link below each answer to see the list of questions again.
To view the clips on the website, you need to have either Windows Media Player or QuickTime player installed. You will also need to have JavaScript enabled, or switched on, in your browser. This is normally the default setting, but you can find out how to check this by reading the answer to the FAQ "How do I check if JavaScript is enabled/switched on in my browser?" lower down this page.
Once you have selected the video clip, a new page and video clip will start to load. On slow connections, for example a 28kb/s or 56kb/s modem, it can take a few minutes for the video player software to appear and then the clip to load. The clip will not play until you click the "play" button (symbolised by a small arrowhead pointing to the right). You don't have to reload to clip to watch it again. Instead, you can rewind it using the controls on the player.
back to topAs long as you have a reasonable video or graphics card and can connect to the internet, your computer should be able to display our online video clips. However, you might need to download and install either the free Windows Media Player or the free QuickTime Player to see the video clips properly. You will also need to make sure JavaScript is enabled (switched on) in your web browser.
back to topUnfortunately not. You need either Windows Media Player or QuickTime installed to be able to view our video clips. However, you can always find a transcript of the video on the same page as the clip.
If you are having problems installing one of the players on a work computer or are unsure of what to do, please contact your organisation’s technical support team or helpdesk. If you are having problems installing a player on a personal computer, the Microsoft website (external link, opens new browser window) and Apple website (external link, opens new browser window) have lots of troubleshooting information.
back to topVideo clips on our website are either MPEG (.mpg) or MOV (.mov) files. To be able to view these clips you will need to have either Windows Media Player or QuickTime player installed.
Check on the Microsoft website (external link, opens new browser window) or the Apple website (external link, opens new browser window) to make sure you have the latest version of one of these players and download an update if needed.
back to topYou can download the latest version of the free Windows Media Player from the Microsoft Windows Media section of the Microsoft website (external link, opens new browser window).
The download will take about 32 minutes on a 56kb/s modem and you will need to remain connected to the internet until the download is complete. Broadband users will find the download process much faster. Once the download has finished, you should follow the onscreen prompts to install the player.
back to topYou can download the latest version of the free QuickTime Player from the QuickTime download page of the Apple website (external link, opens new browser window). Once the download has finished, follow the onscreen prompts to install the player.
back to topYou need JavaScript enabled, or switched on, on your computer to be able to view the video clips on our website. Here is how to check whether your settings are correct in some of the most popular web browsers.
In Internet Explorer for Windows click on Tools > Internet options > Security > Custom Level. Then scroll through the list of settings until you get to "Scripting" near the bottom. Check that "Active scripting" is set to "Enable" by making sure the "radio button" next to it is marked.
In Opera click on Tools > Quick Preferences and check that "Enable JavaScript" is ticked. You can also click on Tools > Preferences to set more preferences for JavaScript. In the Preferences box, the "Enable JavaScript" checkbox can be found under "Multimedia".
In Mozilla or Netscape click on Edit > Preferences. Open the "Advanced" option from the list and select "Scripts and Plug-ins". Check that the appropriate checkbox is ticked under the "Enable JavaScript for" heading.
