RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

Our vision

We will play our part in ensuring that deaf and hard of hearing people are able to access appropriate and high quality communication services when and where they need them.

Our policies

We operate a policy of only using, where possible, language service professionals who are registered with the Independent Registration Panel (IRP). Language service professionals include British Sign Language/English interpreters, lipspeakers, speech-to-text reporters, deafblind interpreters and notetakers.

When a language service professional is registered with the IRP it is a declaration of their professionalism. It also ensures your confidentiality as they work in conjunction with IRP's code of ethics. And it proves that they are deemed safe and suitably insured to practice, and have been checked by the Criminal Records Bureau.

Our standards

We have high standards which are reflected in the services that you receive. When you work with our coordinators and language service professionals you can expect:

  • a quick response when you contact us
  • efficient and effective administration of all of our services
  • your needs to be looked at and an appropriate service provided
  • a service provided by knowledgeable and appropriately trained staff
  • a confidential, impartial and professional service
  • a complaints proceedure and feedback systems.

Working with others

We are represented on an agency steering group that consists of five volunteer agencies. This group aims to:

  • write draft minimum standards for agencies
  • increase the agency contact list
  • consult with all stakeholders about the proposed minimum standards
  • consider the viability of a formal regulatory body to monitor and enforce the minimum standards.
