RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

RNID has developed two tutorial toolkits: "Money and Number" and "Job Preparation".

Logo used by the European Social Fund

The toolkits give support for tutors who provide, or are planning to provide, basic skills support for deaf or hard of hearing adults. They were developed as part of EmployAbility, an RNID basic skills initiative aimed at deaf and hard of hearing adults. The project was partly funded by the Basic Skills Agency’s Adult and Community Learning Fund (ACLF).

The toolkits aim to:

  • Provide a pathway into learning for deaf and hard of hearing adults.
  • Encourage independence in personal financial management and job preparation skills.
  • Support partner training providers in delivering programmes accessible to the target group.

Target users

The packs are designed to be used by tutors with adult learners who:

  • have limited basic skills
  • are in transition to or returning to work or training; and/or
  • are financially excluded.

About the toolkits

The toolkits aim to provide a framework for learning. All session timings are flexible, and it is expected that deaf and deaf aware tutors will deliver sessions in a way that is appropriate to the needs of each group of learners.

Teaching staff will ideally be skilled in using English and British Sign Language (BSL) or Sign Supported English (SSE), depending on learners’ needs, to fully communicate the concepts behind the tasks.

Money and Number

The materials in the "Money and Number" toolkit are mapped to the national curriculum frameworks for numeracy and financial capability. This means that learners’ achievements can be shown against the standards set by the national curriculum.

Handouts

Any of the pages may be photocopied for use with an overhead projector (OHP) if appropriate. The handouts are written in plain English and are designed to be easy to read. They support material covered in the session. It is not possible to follow BSL or other communication support and take notes at the same time. Handouts give learners a written version of what is covered, which replaces notes and can be used for reference.

Learners should be given time to read the slides and handouts before they are discussed.
