RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

What to expect from an RNID employment adviser

You will always be able to communicate in the way you prefer. We will arrange the appropriate communication service. This may be a sign language interpreter (British Sign Language or Sign Supported English), lipspeaker (for people who lipread), or speech-to-text operator (using RNID SpeedText).

You will also find that:

  • All meetings are held in a quiet, private room on a one-to-one basis with a loop system if necessary.
  • All meetings and conversations are completely confidential.
  • You do not have to use the service if you think it is not suitable for you, even after you have met with an employment adviser.
  • There will be no tests or assessments during the meeting.
  • Our service is completely free.

During your first meeting

Your meeting will take the form of an informal chat about our services and how we might be able to support you. Your employment adviser will then make an action plan with you to show how you can work together in the future.

Your employment adviser may work in partnership with another project or organisation if you both decide that is appropriate for you.

Finally, you can agree a date for the next meeting, based on your needs.

What your employment adviser can help you with

Your employment adviser can support you in a number of areas:

  • Liaising with your disability employment adviser to ensure you can access their services and have Access to Work funding if you need it.
  • Assisting you with your CV.
  • Refering you to any training courses you may need.
  • Helping you with any application forms.
  • Speaking to employers and ensuring you get a fair interview.
  • Providing support while you are at work and make sure that Access to Work is in place if you need it.
  • Helping employers with issues at work relating to someone's deafness.
