What type of employment is covered?

The following employment is covered by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA):

  • full time, part-time and temporary workers
  • contract workers.

Voluntary workers may be covered.

The employment part of the DDA covers:

  • recruiting and retaining staff
  • access to training
  • dismissal or redundancy
  • harassment
  • reasonable adjustments.

What else is covered?

The DDA also covers work pension schemes and insurance benefits for employees.

What exceptions are there?

Employers can justify discrimination in certain circumstances. There is more information about this in our factsheet Discrimination and employment - your rights under the DDA

Time limits

A disabled person can bring a complaint of disability discrimination to the Employment Tribunal, but must do so within three months less one day of the date of the discriminatory act.

If there were a number of discriminatory acts, for example harassment over a number of months, then the last instance must be within the three month period.
