Is this course for me?

This course is for you, if you:

  • have achieved CACDP Level 3 in BSL or equivalent
  • wish to develop your BSL language skills, confidence and fluency to a higher level
  • wish to gain a better insight into the deaf community
  • wish to acquire some experiences of using appropriate BSL in various situations
  • wish to gain better understanding of BSL grammar at Level 4
  • considering enrolling on a Level 4 NVQ in BSL award.

What is this course?

During this course you will develop your BSL skills up to level 4 standard.

The course is designed to:

  • increase your confidence
  • improve your language fluency skills
  • develop the proper use of BSL at an advanced level
  • give you practical experience in a productive working environment
  • prepare you for Level 4 NVQ in BSL.

Completing this course doesn't give you a qualification, but it does give you the language skills you need to go on and achieve your Level 4 NVQ in BSL.

What does the course involve?

The course will include topics such as:

  • Advanced use of finger spelling patterns
  • Development of complex use of roleshifts
  • Video analysis on various BSL features
  • Advance effective use of placements
  • Translation exercises
  • Idiomatic use of non-manual features to enhance the meaning of BSL
  • Range of BSL signed expressions as used idiomatically by native users
  • Work jargon
  • Use of formal and informal BSL
  • Explore how changes to syntax/lexicon reflect different register appropriate for different situations
  • Interruption and conversation repair
  • Cohesion within BSL
  • Use of connectors
  • Presentation giving

A variety of exercises will be used throughout the course to reinforce your learning. We also produce video resources for this course.

After completing the course, you should feel suitably skilled to enrol on a Level 4 NVQ in BSL programme.
