Is this course for me?

This course is for you if you:

  • have a CACDP Level 2 in BSL or equivalent
  • want to develop your BSL language skills, confidence and fluency
  • want a better insight into the deaf community
  • want to communicate better with deaf friends, family, colleagues or clients
  • want to broaden your knowledge of BSL vocabulary
  • want experience of using appropriate BSL in a number of situations
  • want a better understanding of BSL grammar at Level 3 standard
  • want to achieve Level 3 Certificate in BSL

What does the course include?

The course develops your skills to Level 3 standard, and gives you a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification in BSL.

This qualification has the same status as the Level 3 National Vocation Qualification (NVQ) in BSL. It is different from the Level 3 NVQ as it is a non-vocational course. It provides you with language development units, which develop your skills to level 3 standard. You then undergo an assessment to achieve your qualification and build a portfolio of evidence.

Level 3 NVQ in BSL is assessment based and you do need to have level 3 signing skills to take the course. Both qualifications are approved by CACDP and the Quality Curriculum Authority (QCA) and are direct routes to becoming an interpreter.

How is the course structured?

The course is split into two sections, language development and assessment.

Section 1: Language development

The language development section is split into themes. You will need to study three of the five themes. The themes are:

  • Theme 1 - BSL knowledge and skills: mandatory
  • Theme 2 - Society: mandatory
  • Theme 3 - Education: optional
  • Theme 4 - Health: optional
  • Theme 5 - The workplace: optional

You choose one of the three optional themes, but you will gain some knowledge of all the themes.

The units will:

  • increase your confidence
  • improve your language fluency skills
  • give you a better knowledge of BSL

Section 2: Assessment

When you achieve level 3 BSL language skills, you will then move onto this section of the course. You and your tutor or assessor will decide when you are ready for this stage.

You'll compile a portfolio of evidence to meet CACDP standards. This includes a minimum of five video clips of your BSL skills. We provide you with all the equipment and support you need to build your portfolio. You'll be assigned a qualified deaf tutor or assessor, who will support you through one-to-one assessments, tutorials and supervision.

The final stage is:

  1. You submit your portfolio to us.
  2. CACDP moderate it to make sure that it meets national standards.

What are the dates of the course?

The course lasts for 20 days and is spread over 7 months.

Please note that no course dates are scheduled at this time.

You do need to come to every date to show you are committed and dedicated to the course, your tutor or assessor and the production of your portfolio.
