This course is for you, if you:

  • have achieved CACDP Level 4 NVQ in BSL
  • have worked with the deaf community for a minimum of one year
  • have attended an interpreter training programme
  • have experience of interpreting
  • want to qualify as a BSL/English interpreter.

What does the course include?

During the course you will build a portfolio of your BSL Level 4 interpreting skills. This is used to show that you meet the National Occupational Standard in Interpreting.

We will provide all the equipment and support you need to build your portfolio. You will be assigned an assessor, who will support you through one-to-one assessment, tutorials and supervision.

How is the course structured?

ScheduleOverview

Introduction: two days

These two days include information on how to build a portfolio of written and video evidence, description of the NVQ terminology and how to meet the criteria outlined in the qualification standards.

You will have an initial planning meeting with your allocated assessor. On the second day there will be a chance to start collecting your video evidence.

Video evidence collection: three days

This is an opportunity to collect video evidence of your interpreting skills for your portfolio.

Assessment and guidance meeting: one day

You will discuss progress on your portfolio with your assessor and produce a plan to complete your portfolio.

Final assessment and guidance meetings: two days

Your assessor will give you one-to-one support and advice in completing your portfolio.

The final stages of the process are:

  1. You submit your portfolio to us.
  2. An internal verifier assesses your portfolio.
  3. An external verifier from the awarding body, CACDP, will sample portfolios to ensure that you have met the standards described in the award.

On completing the course, you can then register as a Member of the Register of BSL/English Interpreters (MRSLI) with awarding body CACDP. Find out more on the CACDP website (external link, opens new browser window).
