Is this course for me?

This course is for you if you:

  • have achieved CACDP Level 3 in BSL or equivalent
  • have been working with the deaf community for a minimum of one year
  • have attended a Level 4 BSL language coaching course, or already have level 4 signing skills
  • wish to use BSL at an advanced level within work situations
  • are considering becoming a BSL/English Interpreter, BSL tutor at an advanced level or a BSL NVQ assessor.

What does the course include?

During the course you will build a portfolio of evidence of your Level 4 BSL skills. This is then used to show that you meet the CACDP Level 4 standards.

We'll provide all the equipment and support you need to build your portfolio. You'll be assigned to a fluent BSL deaf assessor, who will support you through one-to-one assessment, tutorials and supervision.

How is the course structured?

Days Overview 

Portfolio Building Day: one day

This day will include information on how to build a portfolio of written and video evidence, description of the NVQ terminology, and how to meet the criteria outlined in the qualification standards. 

Video Evidence Collection: two days 

This is an opportunity to collect video evidence of your BSL skills for your portfolio.

Assessment and Guidance Meeting: two days

You'll discuss progress of your portfolio with your assessor and produce a plan to complete your portfolio.

Set Task Day: one day

You will film your set task with your assessor as agreed with the assessment centre.

Final Assessment and Guidance meetings: one day

Your assessor will give you one-to-one support and advice on completing your portfolio. 

The final stages of the process are:

  1. You submit your portfolio to us.
  2. An Internal Verifier (IV) assesses your portfolio.
  3. An External verifier (EV) from the awarding body, CACDP, will sample portfolios to ensure that you have met the standards described in the award.

What are the dates of the course?

The course runs for 7 days, over 7 months.

You do need to attend all of the dates and show commitment and dedication to the course, your assessor and the production of your own portfolio.
