RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

In Rotherham we run two projects: an equipment assessment, provision and information project and an outreach project.

Equipment project

We have a contract from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council to provide information and advice on all aspects of deafness, but with special emphasis on equipment for all deaf and hard of hearing people. We work in partnership with all statutory and relevant voluntary agencies.

Services

The main areas of work within the project are:

  • home assessments, and equipment demonstration and provision
  • access to social services' community care services
  • advice to the local authority about technological advances relating to equipment
  • empowering users and carers through information provision.

Outreach project

This project is funded through the Community Fund for 12 months, and works alongside the equipment assessment contract. Our objectives are to develop and deliver outreach services, and to reduce the social exclusion of deaf and hard of hearing people in the Rotherham area. In particular the project provides a follow-up service for newly diagnosed hearing aid users following hearing assessment.

Services

Our key roles within this project are to:

  • visit newly diagnosed deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people in their own homes to offer support in coping with their deafness and the use of hearing aids
  • work with fellow professionals in allied fields to develop awareness of the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people and promote the service
  • set up information and advice clinics in rural areas
  • undertake minor repairs and/or retubing.
