RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

A hearing aid being fitted

We offer advice, guidance and support to help with the rehabilitation of newly deafened, deaf and hard of hearing people in the community. Our team of trained community support officers visits clients in their own homes and offers support, guidance and information on the use of hearing aids.

As well as providing practical help on how to make the most of a hearing aid, our officers can offer a shoulder to lean on and advice on all deaf services.

The service complements our Equipment Assessment Service, and assessment services that may be provided by your local authority social services team.

We hope to give you confidence in using hearing aids, and help you develop strategies for coping.

Rehabilitation

RNID can offer seminars for people who have been deafened suddenly and are finding it difficult to come to terms with some of the aspects of deafness. This includes advice on work related issues and Access to Work programmes, relationship counselling and support with communication. We can offer:

  • coping strategies
  • communication tactics
  • help with relationship issues
  • an introduction to dealing with social services
  • employment advice
  • volunteer programmes.

Alternatives to home visits

Many of our centres offer drop-in clinics and even clubs. These can be an effective way of meeting people and getting extra advice from our experts.

How can I help?

Many of our volunteers are hard of hearing themselves, and are often good mentors as they can empathise with our clients. Please contact us via the RNID Information Line or one of our centres to discuss volunteering.
