RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

Close up image of an old style school report

There are more than 34,000 deaf children and young people in the UK, and all too often they are underachieving at school. The Department for Children Schools and Families reported in 2007 that only 32.9% of deaf children receive 5 A* to C grades at GCSE compared to 57.1% of hearing children.

The needs of deaf children at school are not being met due to a lack of appropriate specialist support. This is unacceptable and we are working to make sure that the needs of every deaf child are met in every school.
