RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

Although cochlear implants have already made a huge difference in deaf people’s lives, there is plenty of potential to further improve this technique. Here are some of the current RNID-funded research projects working towards such improvements.

Developing cochlear implants and hearing aids that complement each other

This could mean that someone who has a cochlear implant in one ear can benefit more from having a hearing aid in the other.

Finding ways to control nerve regeneration

Following hearing loss, the nerves that connect the inner ear to the brain deteriorate. Scientists have now learned how to prevent this and even how to regenerate damaged parts of the nerves in the ear, using nerve growth chemicals.

However, the regenerated nerves are often tangled and disorganised. Researchers are now looking for ways of controlling this process, so that implants can produce better results.

Developing a new implant for people who cannot benefit from cochlear implants

Researchers are looking at how the brain responds when sound is heard, and this information will be used to make implants that send signals straight to the brain.
