We work with other deafness and disability organisations to push for improvements in the education of pupils who are deaf or hard of hearing.

We campaigned for all newborn babies to be screened for hearing loss and since the implementation of this policy across the UK we hope that children who are deaf or hard of hearing will have a better start in life and improved access to support when they need it.
We are a member of the Special Educational Consortium (external link) which campaigns to protect and promote the interests of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Through this group we lobby on new legislation and ensure that the needs of children and young people who are deaf or hard of hearing are recognised when policies change.
There are various government documents which outline the government's policy framework:
Download the RNID report "At the heart of inclusion: the role of specialist support for deaf pupils" - PDF 800KB (external link, opens new browser window) to read more about this subject and "Beyond bricks and mortar" - PDF 1.54MB (external link, opens new browser window), our report looking at an alternative approach to the SEN debate.
In addition we publish a wide range of information on education, aimed at teachers, tutors and deaf and hard of hearing students. The materials have been written by teachers for teachers, with a strong emphasis on meeting the needs of deaf pupils included in mainstream schools.
