Holding your own fundraising event is a great way to get together with friends and family. No matter how much money you raise for us, every penny makes a difference. Here are some examples of events held by our community fundraisers.
Brian Gillard, president of Thorpe Bay Bowling club, chose RNID as 'charity of the year' and raised £1700 for us. The club held small events and a charity day to raise money.
The fundraising started with a new years eve party, charging £10 a ticket, followed by a new years day walk and breakfast. A collection box was placed in the club bar for loose change, and any money won by members in a club competition was encouraged to go in the charity pot. By 1 January, they already had £300.
On the charity day, a bowling competition was held, which included entry fees and spider costing £1 to bowl for a bottle of whisky. A profit was made on the lunch, and the various fun games throughout the day helped to raise money for the collection.
Phil Sandler, from Cromford in Derbyshire, has raised over £800 for us. Phil started of small, but has now placed a number of collection boxes in various locations, from small shops to supermarkets.
"It all began when I saw a request for supporters to place RNID collection boxes. I'm profoundly deaf and I was eager to give something back. People may only give a few odd coppers, but it’s amazing how it adds up. You get a great deal of support from RNID fundraising and so much satisfaction."
Ronald Hornby from Maguiresbridge, raised £780 by asking friends and family to make a donation to RNID Northern Ireland, the largest charity representing the province's 219,000 deaf and hard of hearing people, instead of buying gifts for his 90th birthday.
Ronald, who wears hearing aids in both ears, said: "As someone with a hearing loss myself, I'm familiar with RNID Northern Ireland's excellent work for deaf and hard of hearing people. The charity provides much-needed information and support, as well as fantastic RNID Products, such as home loop and pager systems, which makes life so much easier."
Peter Hills, Assistant County Commissioner Special Needs, has raised over £200 for us.
Peter has held sign language and deaf awareness sessions for members of the guide movement to help raise awareness of special needs in scouting. The members learnt how to fingerspell, sign their promise and participated in a ‘signed’ game. Donations were made at the end of the evening.
Peter hopes to continue with these evenings across the county.
Cambridge Young Suzuki Musicians raised over £127 by holding music concerts in Cambridge.
An RNID display was placed in the hall they performed at to raise awareness. They wanted to raise awareness of RNID with the children in the musicians club and help them understand how much they should value their hearing and the pleasure of listening to music.
At Braunstone West Social Centre, fortnightly raffles are run at the modern sequence dance. When £100 is raised at these events the money is sent to a charity.
The Manchester Ladies Parks Bowls Association play every week during April and September. Cup knockouts are organised every month at different club greens where tea, sandwiches and cakes are provided and raffle tickets sold. They donated £200 to us because they felt that deaf and hard of hearing people are in need of support.
The Colchester Choral Society has raised a total of £10,710 for us over the years, through collections at concerts, corporate sponsors, and social fundraising evenings. They wanted to contribute to breaking down barriers of opportunity and fulfilment for those who, through no fault of their own, are denied the enjoyment of participating in choral singing.
