RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

What do you do for RNID?

I work in the Campaigns team. Our goal is to bring about changes to improve the lives of deaf and hard of hearing people. Campaigning is about changing people’s behaviour through convincing arguments and activities. We aim to tackle discrimination, improve services and empower people to make a difference. Campaigning involves a lot of different activities including organising events, lobbying MPs, writing briefings and lots of talking to different sorts of people.

Describe a typical working day

The people are really committed, creative and caring and there is always something going on!

Every day is different but the types of things I do include going to Parliament to meet an MP, planning an event, writing a report or meeting with colleagues to discuss a new idea. Campaigning is very hands on and if we plan an activity everyone will be expected to muck in. This could include anything from promoting our campaigns at a festival to protesting outside Parliament. I am learning sign language so I try to practice that with colleagues every day.

What do you enjoy most about working for RNID?

RNID is a great place to work. The people are really committed, creative and caring and there is always something going on!

What qualifications or experience help to get a job like yours?

I did a politics degree and my first job after graduating was with a lobbying company in Westminster. I then moved on to be a Public Affairs Officer with a charity before getting my job in Campaigns here. Campaigns knowledge as well as political experience and an interest in the media, policy and marketing are all useful skills to have as campaigns can cover a broad range of activity.

Any advice for people who would like a similar job?

Working as an intern during university really helps on your CV. If you don’t see any positions advertised then don’t be afraid of just sending out speculative letters to organisations you are interested in. The offer of a bit of free help may come at just the right time. Also get involved in local campaigns – helping to save your local post office or encouraging your neighbours to recycle is all good experience.
