RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

What do you do for RNID?

I am basically responsible for ensuring all orders generated by RNID Product's sales team are dispatched to a variety of customers including local authorities, businesses and private customers in a timely, efficient and professional manner.

I like the fact that I'm always busy and there are different challenges.

In addition to my 'day job' I am also one of RNID's internal reviewers for Investors in People.

Describe a typical working day

My day starts with a quick check of emails. I then generate a picking list which will be separated into two sections for post and carrier, dependent upon cost and weight. I try to concentrate on carrier (larger, more expensive items) in the morning. Once the orders have been picked from stock I produce delivery notes to be attached to each consignment. This operation is repeated throughout the course of the day in readiness for Royal Mail and Business Post pick up between 4pm and 5pm.

We also receive deliveries between 8.30am and 5pm which can range from one box of accessories to pallets of publications. Once unloaded and physically checked against the delivery note, the stock is put away in its relevant area and booked onto the stock file.

What do you enjoy most about working for RNID?

I like the fact that I'm always busy and there are different challenges to meet on a constant basis. I am fortunate in that I work with a very nice group of people both at RNID Products and the organisation as a whole. In addition I feel satisfied that by performing my role I can in some way help to enhance the quality of others' lives.

What qualifications or experience help to get a job like yours?

The main prerequisites would definitely be a good sense of humour and the patience of a saint. Other than that you would need good work ethics, be physically fit, have a good command of maths and English and basic computer literacy. Experience and a current counterbalance forklift licence are advantageous but not essential. Lastly it is essential, as in most occupations, that you are a team player.

Any advice for people who would like a similar job?

If you enjoy a physical job that keeps you busy all the time then give it a whirl.
