I work in Bath at a care home supporting service users with learning difficulties. Previously I worked at a different care home supporting a large group of service users with a range of difficulties. I am also the southwest employee group representative and a member of RNID’s deaf staff group.
I enjoy the friendly atmosphere and general support that I receive from other employees.
There is nothing typical about my working day! Working with service users with learning difficulties can be very unpredictable, but an average day will include supporting service users with their daily routines, personal care, appointments and various other things to help them live as comfortably as possible. I also arrange activities for the service users, such as going to the cinema or bowling.
I enjoy the friendly atmosphere and general support that I receive from other employees and I enjoy making a difference to the lives of our service users.
An NVQ in care or care experience always helps, but a willingness to help and learn is also vital. Working with service users with little or no communication skills can be hard work and stressful, so people must be calm and patient.
If you are a bit crazy, but love helping people and are willing to learn new skills then just go for it as this job is really good fun. We have our ups and downs but the ups far outweigh the downs and others in the team are always willing to help.
