Find out why some of our RNID volunteers help out and what they get up to.
I am an 80-year-old retired banker, originally from Bangor, but I grew up in Dungannon and now live in Portadown. Wearing hearing aids prompted me to volunteer with RNID to try to help others who were having problems with their own hearing aids.
After 23 years teaching, my previous Royal Air Force service, including time spent around noisy jet aeroplanes, caught up with me. I signed up for a lipreading course, which happened to be run by Charlotte, one of RNID's equipment officers. Charlotte soon roped me in as a volunteer and the rest, as they say, is history.
My name is Marion Cotter. I am 54 years old and I am a volunteer for Deafblind UK and for RNID. Over the years I have increased my skills and am now able to teach Braille and Moon and have nearly completed a degree course in deafblind studies.
My name is Gerry Knight, I'm 53 and a full-time press photographer. I am also part of the RNID Northern Ireland Hearing Aid Volunteer project with Sperrin Lakeland Trust.
