Deaf and hard of hearing people may use communication support services other than the better-known options of British Sign Language/English interpreting, video interpreting, lipspeaking, speech-to-text reporting, deafblind interpreting and notetaking. These alternatives include communication support workers and Sign Supported English.
Some deaf people prefer to use SSE. SSE is a combination of signs from British Sign Language (BSL) together with English grammar. It is not a distinct language and the balance of English to BSL signs and features varies tremendously, depending on the linguistic skills and knowledge of the user.
Sign language interpreters can interpret into and from BSL or SSE, depending on the requirements of the deaf person. If you prefer SSE, for example at a conference, you should make this clear when you make your booking as there may be different communication requirements in one group of deaf people.
If you would like more information about SSE contact your communication services office.
