The 14-19 phase is an important stage of education as pupils choose which courses to take in Key Stage 4 and their progression routes into sixth form, further education college or employment.
If your child uses the natural aural approach to communication, contact DELTA. DELTA is a voluntary association of young deaf adults, the families and teachers of deaf children and stands for Deaf Education through Listening and Talking.
The Connexions Service (external link, opens new browser window) provides support for learners aged 13-19 (up to 25 for those with special educational needs or disabilities) and will help with decisions about and planning for transition between Key Stages 3 and 4 and post-16. Its personal advisers can also help with a range of issues other than traditional ‘careers’.
Most pupils will have opportunities to undertake a work experience placement in Key Stage 4 and many schools have links with local colleges. These are ideal opportunities for deaf learners to consider the support and modifications they may need post-16 and you will be able to discuss these issues during annual reviews and when the transition plan is being drafted.
Young people may decide they want to try different types of technical support. Read our factsheet "Equipment for deaf learners".
Financial support may be available for students up to age 18. Read our factsheet "Benefits – information for deaf students".
The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) (external link, opens new browser window) provides information and support for families of deaf children throughout their education.
