Primary and secondary schoool is an important time for education for all deaf children. From the ages of five to14, children reach an important stage in their development and need to be guided in the right way with the right information.

If you have recently found out that your child or relative is deaf and you are looking for specific help, contact the National Deaf Children’s Society, (external link, opens new browser window)(NDCS) which provides information and support for families of deaf children throughout their education.
The NDCS publishes a directory that lists all the education services available by region. For more information please contact NDCS.
Since September 2002, if your child has a disability and has been discriminated against in education, you may be able to challenge this under the DDA.
It is unlawful for education providers to treat you less favourably for a reason related to your disability or to fail to make reasonable adjustments to prevent you being placed at a substantial disadvantage.
All local education authorities are responsible for making arrangements for parent partnership services to inform parents, schools and others about their services and how to access them. The parent partnership service can also help parents deal with any disagreements and resolve them with their local authority. If the local authority refuses to let your child go to a deaf school, contact the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) (external link, opens new browser window) for information and support.
