RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

Choosing a university is a difficult decision, so it is a good idea to look at a few places before you decide. These are ways that you can assess which university is right for you:

  • Most universities have 'open days' where you can take a look around and chat to course tutors.
  • You can ask your careers adviser at your school or college for advice: they should have details of universities and may be able to help you choose.
  • You may also have a local careers adviser. You could find details of these in your local library or look on Connexions (external link, opens new browser window), where you can get advice by email or face to face.
  • Take a look at UCAS (external link, opens new browser window) for information on all university courses, or type "choosing a university" into a search engine on the internet: this will bring up some more places that will give you advice.

Which universities provide support for deaf students?

All universities are covered under the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA), which means they are required to provide support for all disabled students. However, the amount of support may vary depending on the university.

You should make sure you visit the university you are thinking of attending and ask to meet someone from its support service. This will give you the chance to ask questions and will help you get a good impression of what support you could get.

Check the university website and prospectus. Student support should be listed there and you will be able to get an idea of how much support is available.
