RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

NUS is a voluntary membership organisation and one of the largest student organisations in the world. It represents the interests of around five million students in further and higher education throughout the United Kingdom.

Students' unions are the backbone of NUS and are integral to student life. They provide a broad range of services from welfare advice and information to clubs and societies, bars, shops and catering services, student community action projects and charity fundraising events.

Students' unions also play a vital role in representing students' views within the university.  Have a look on NUS online (external link, opens new browser window) for more information on joining your students union.

Meeting other deaf students at university

  • There are lots of ways to meet other students. A good idea is to join your university’s students’ union – there are usually many different clubs and societies within this that you can get involved in.
  • Some universities may have deaf social groups – the student support services may have details of these.
  • Fresher’s week is the best time to meet other students in the same position as you. This is usually run in the first week, or a week before you start at university.

Some universities may have an email group specifically for deaf students, where you can contact other students and chat.
