RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

It is important to register with a local doctor when you go to university. Most universities have their own medical practice that you can join.

How do I join a university health service?

You can normally join the health service in your first week at university. You will need to take your NHS medical card with you or give details of your family doctor.

Tip: Check whether your vaccinations are up to date. It is a good idea to check the university recommendations about vaccinations.

What does a university health service offer students?

  • An appointment with a doctor when you are feeling ill or have personal problems.
  • Nursing services e.g. wound dressings, injections, ear syringing, advice about general health and contraception.
  • Sexual health advice e.g. contraception, cervical smears, pregnancy testing, advice and testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Vaccinations for holidays and relevant health warnings.
  • Sick notes – if you are too ill to go to lectures or finish your assignment on time then you should get a sick note from the doctor.
  • Physiotherapy – If the health service does not have a physiotherapist it will refer you to someone.

Will I be able to communicate with staff at the medical practice?

The health service is covered by the Disability Discrimination Act. This means that it has to make ‘reasonable’ adjustments to make sure that everyone can access its service.

Ask the staff to arrange the right communication support for you, for example an interpreter, lipspeaker or notetaker.
