About captions

Theatre companies are increasingly providing signed or captioned (subtitled) performances. However, improvements still need to be made and there should be greater deaf awareness among staff.

STAGETEXT

STAGETEXT provides and promotes captioned performances across the country and also trains staff in the use of captioning equipment.

For up-to-date listings of current and forthcoming captioned performances see the STAGETEXT website (external link, opens new browser window).

Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC)

The RSC has two complete captioning systems and is now captioning some in-house performances. Visit the RSC website (external link, opens new browser window) for more information on performances and times.

Signed Performances in Theatre (SPIT)

Actors on stage

SPIT (external link, opens new browser window) was founded in 1994 and is the leading national body encouraging the use of sign language interpreted performances to increase the enjoyment and accessibility of deaf and hard of hearing theatregoers who use British Sign Language (BSL).
