If you have a problem with your NHS aid, there is an open repair clinic every morning, Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm at Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

Hearing therapy and tinnitus clinics are also available at both hospitals.
There is a range of benefits that you may be able to claim as a deaf person. You will need to fill in a claim form for each type of benefit you want to claim. You can get these from the Benefit Enquiry Line or download them from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) website (external link, opens new browser window).

The society provides support for deaf and hard of hearing children and their families and organises social activities. Easter and summer play schemes enable deaf and hard of hearing children to meet their peers in school holidays and avoid isolation.

If you are looking for work and would like help and advice, go to your local Jobcentre Plus. You can ask for an appointment to see a disability employment adviser (DEA). A DEA is part of the disability service team. They will help you draw up an action plan to find a job or training and tell you about the access to work scheme.
If you have a disability or long-term health consideration, you live in Luton, Dunstable or Houghton Regis and want to work, or talk to someone about work, the team offers you individual advice and support based on your skills, abilities and needs. The team also helps employers who would like to know more about employing disabled people.

A countrywide disability information service for disabled people, their families, carers, friends and associated professionals. The centre has an equipment display area where you can see and try out equipment. Staff members are on hand to give advice and general guidance on the suitability of equipment.
The information and equipment area’s opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-4pm. There is a drop-in session on Wednesdays from 10am-3pm.

There are time limits for bringing complaints under the Disability Discrimination Act. The time limit starts from the date when the discrimination took place. If it is an employment issue, you have three months (minus one day) to bring a complaint to the Employment Tribunal. If it is to do with goods, services or education, you have six months (minus one day) to bring a case to court. If you are thinking of taking legal action, you should get legal advice immediately.

Many deaf and hard of hearing people benefit from joining a lipreading class. A qualified teacher can show you how to recognise words by their shape on the lips rather than by sound. This can increase your confidence and allow you to participate more fully in conversations, meetings and social situations. Classes are held at locations throughout the county.

Hearing Advisers visit people at home to give advice on all aspects of hearing loss and technical help. This may be basic help with changing batteries and re-tubing aids. It may be supporting first-time hearing aid users or people having difficulty coming to terms with hearing loss.

The pastoral service helps people with a hearing loss to share fully in the life of the church. This is promoted with the help of groups of volunteers in Bedford and Luton. Masses in sign language and spoken word are held regularly; meetings, pilgrimages, retreats and social events are organised and catechists are provided for deaf children.
