RNID: For deaf and hard of hearing people.

man having a Real Ear Measurement taken

At this appointment your audiologist will fit your hearing aid(s), make sure that the aid is programmed to give you the best results, and show you how to use it and look after it. They will:

  • Check that your earmould is comfortable and easy to put in and take out.
  • Put your new hearing aid in and check that it is programmed exactly to suit your hearing and give you the best results. This is done using 'Real Ear Measurement' with a tiny microphone placed in your ear and equipment that displays the sound levels on a screen.
  • Ask you how things sound and make necessary adjustments.
  • Show you how to put the aid in and take it out again.
  • Show you how to change the battery and use the controls.
  • Show you how to look after your hearing aid.
  • Give you advice on using your hearing aid and getting the best from it and give you a booklet that explains this.
  • Give you information about arrangements for getting more batteries, repairs and any further help or organisations you may find useful.
  • Book your next appointment in 8-12 weeks.
