BDP 400 telephone including half price headset |
This amplified phone has been designed for people who are visually impaired and hard of hearing. It was designed with the assistance of RNIB to ensure that the features provide maximum benefit to people with sight loss. This phone was a finalist at the Enable '09 Best Electrical Product Competition. THIS VERSION COMES WITH A HALF PRICE CLA3 HEADSET INCLUDED IN THE PACK PRICE.
The BDP400 announces the numbers and menu options when you press them, so you can be sure which button you've pressed. In fact it offers full vocalisation of names, numbers, menu, commands, date and time. This is the only phone we've come across that vocalises such a comprehensive range of functions.
The phone has Caller ID, but with a difference. You don't just get the name or number of the caller on the screen, you also have them announced so you can hear who is calling you.
The screen has a unique choice of fonts and colours to provide the best contrast combination for your sight loss.
The buttons are large and have tactile symbols on them so you can feel which button you are pressing. A nice detail is that the instructions are in large print which is something that could easily have been overlooked if there hadn't been such attention to detail.
The features for people who are hard of hearing are also strong. The phone has a strong amplification and you can also set the tone of the caller's voice to suit your particular hearing loss.
The BDP400 is hearing aid compatible, so if you have a hearing aid with a T setting you can listen to telephone conversations without any disturbing background noise.
There's a bright flashing light to draw your attention to the phone ringing, as well as an amplified ringer.
The hands-free function is strong, enabling you to hear and talk without holding the handset, leaving your hands free to type or write.
There are three speed-dial buttons that are useful because they allow you to phone your most commonly called contacts at the press of a button.
CLA3 Headset
This headset is included in the pack and can be used with a wide range of telephones, audio equipment and even laptops so that you can hear more clearly and listen hands-free. It also has a microphone so you can talk into the headset too.
It is also compatible with hearing aids with a T or loop setting. This means you can flip your hearing aid to the required setting and it will cut out any background noise and will also overcome any interference you may get between the phone and the hearing aid.

We are impressed with the attention to detail and the fact that the phone performs well for people who are visually and hearing impaired. In trying to offer support for two different types of sensory loss there was a danger the phone would not quite suit either, but we feel this phone performs well in both areas.
