This amplified phone lets you create three different user profiles where the tone, volume and boost settings are tailored to you hearing. At the press of a button the next user can switch to the profile they have set for themselves. This is ideal for households with mixed hearing, as it means the phone is ready to use at the press of a button, without having to check the volume and tone first.
The handset and ringer volumes are very good and the five band graphic equaliser allows you to set the tone more accurately than most other phones. There's an induction loop in the phone so if you have a hearing aid with a T setting then you won't get background noise while you talk.
The phone includes an answer machine and can also announce the numbers as you press them to help you dial correctly (although this can be switched off). The Powertel 58 also has three speed-dial buttons to save dialing altogether for your three most commonly called people.
The backlit screen displays the caller's number if you subscribe to your service provider's Caller ID service. You can also program people's telephone numbers into your phone so you can see the name of the person calling before you pick up - a great way to avoid cold callers.
The loudspeaker means you can talk on the phone while keeping your hands-free to type or write things down.
The Powertel 580 T399 is also available which has similar features but comes in the cordless digital format.

This is a great phone in almost every respect. It has excellent amplification on the handset and the ringer and being able to set different user profiles is a fantastic idea that is unique to the Powertel range. The instructions have been a bit tricky for some people so it's worth having someone available that is used to fiddling with gadgets when you come to set up the phone. Warning:
*Even though the corded telephone unit can operate without a mains power supply. The cordless unit relies on a mains charge, if depleted the telephone cannot be used to make calls.
**Caution: This telephone is capable of producing very high volume levels when the ‘Boost’ is switched on and the volume control is set to maximum. Extreme caution should be taken if the handset is to be shared between users with normal hearing and those with hearing impairment.
